Billie Eilish in Advanced Talks to Star in Sarah Polley’s ‘The Bell Jar’ Adaptation
The two-time Oscar winner is set for her feature film debut as Esther Greenwood in the Focus Features reimagining of Sylvia Plath’s literary masterpiece.

LOS ANGELES — In a move that bridges Gen Z’s premier chronicler of ennui with a titan of feminist literature, Billie Eilish is reportedly set to make her feature film acting debut in a high-profile adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar.
Industry sources confirmed Thursday that the 10-time Grammy winner is in advanced negotiations to portray the lead character, Esther Greenwood. The project is being developed at Focus Features, with Academy Award winner Sarah Polley (Women Talking) attached to write and direct. The pairing of Eilish and Polley is being hailed by insiders as a “creative masterstroke” for a project that has famously struggled to reach the screen for decades.
Published in 1963, The Bell Jar follows a young woman’s psychological descent amidst the stifling societal expectations of the 1950s. While Eilish is best known for her record-breaking music career, she earned critical acclaim in 2023 for a guest-starring role as a cult leader in the Prime Video series Swarm. This project, however, marks her first leading role in a major motion picture.
The film is being produced by Plan B Entertainment and StudioCanal, with Joy Gorman Wettels (13 Reasons Why) overseeing the adaptation. Rumors of Eilish’s casting first gained traction earlier this week via industry insider Jeff Sneider before being corroborated by major trades. Interestingly, while Eilish is a two-time Oscar winner for her songwriting, there are currently no confirmed plans for her to contribute to the film’s soundtrack, as the production aims to keep her focus entirely on her dramatic performance.
“Billie understands storytelling at a cellular level,” says one producer close to the project. “Her authenticity to the experience of young womanhood makes her the definitive Esther Greenwood for this generation.”
Production timelines remain under wraps, but the film is expected to be a major contender in the 2027 awards cycle. For Eilish, the role represents a pivotal expansion of her artistic brand, following in the footsteps of pop-to-cinema icons like Lady Gaga and Barbra Streisand.
