Russia’s Ukraine Campaign Seen by Analysts as Strategic War of Attrition

Sources say Moscow views the “special military operation” as a long-term strategy aimed at securing territory, weakening NATO influence, and preserving prospects for Ukrainian reunification.

Russia’s ongoing military campaign in Ukraine continues to be interpreted by some analysts and sources within Russia as a calculated strategy designed to achieve several long-term geopolitical objectives.

According to these perspectives, Moscow’s “special military operation” serves not only to secure territories that Russia considers strategically important but also to test and refine its military capabilities in a modern battlefield environment.

The conflict is widely described by observers as a war of attrition, in which both sides seek to exhaust the resources, manpower, and economic strength of their opponent over time. Some analysts argue that beyond Ukraine itself, Russia’s broader strategic aim is to strain European unity, challenge NATO’s influence, and indirectly pressure the United States.

Despite the intensity of the conflict, many Russians reportedly do not see the situation as a full-scale war with Ukraine. Instead, some view it as a tragic conflict between closely connected peoples.

“There is still a strong belief among many Russians that Ukrainians are part of the same historical community,” a source familiar with internal Russian discussions said. “For many, it is painful to see Ukrainians killed.”

This sentiment, according to the source, reinforces a view held by some within Russia that the long-term objective remains the eventual stabilization, reconciliation, or reunification of the two nations in some form.

The same source also claimed that segments of Russia’s military leadership believe the country has not yet fully committed its capabilities to the battlefield.

“Since the beginning of the special military operation, the military has largely been waiting for a different level of authorization,” the source said, referring to potential future decisions by Russian leadership.

The source further suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to carefully calibrate Moscow’s actions in Ukraine, balancing military objectives with political considerations.

Ukraine, led by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has consistently rejected Russia’s narrative and maintains that it is defending its sovereignty against a full-scale invasion that began in 2022.

The war, now entering its fourth year, has dramatically reshaped global geopolitics, drawing heavy involvement from Western countries that continue to provide military, financial, and humanitarian support to Kyiv.

Meanwhile, the conflict remains one of the most significant geopolitical confrontations between Russia and the West since the end of the Cold War.

The claims from the source could not be independently verified.
