Uganda’s Army Chief Issues 30-Day Ultimatum to Turkey: Demands $1 Billion and a Bride

KAMPALA, Uganda — In an extraordinary escalation of “digital diplomacy” that has left international observers stunned, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and the nation’s top military commander, has issued a formal ultimatum to Turkey demanding $1 billion and a bride in exchange for continued diplomatic relations.

The series of social media posts, which began appearing late Saturday, gave the Turkish government exactly 30 days to meet the conditions or face the immediate closure of its embassy in Kampala and a total ban on Turkish Airlines within Ugandan airspace. General Kainerugaba, who serves as the Chief of Defence Forces, justified the monetary demand as a “security dividend” for Uganda’s long-standing military intervention in Somalia.

However, the demand took a turn toward the surreal when the General added a personal condition to the geopolitical debt. “On top of the $1 billion from Turkey, I want the most beautiful woman in that country for a wife!” he wrote, an assertion that immediately sparked criticism from human rights groups.

This is not the first time Kainerugaba’s social media presence has triggered a regional crisis. In 2022, he was forced to apologize after jokingly threatening to invade neighboring Kenya. While many in the Ugandan government have previously dismissed his posts as “military humor,” his current role as the head of the army gives his threats a more ominous weight.

As of Sunday evening, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not issued a formal response to the ultimatum. In Kampala, the mood remains tense as veteran diplomats scramble to assess whether the General’s demands represent a shift in Ugandan foreign policy. With the 30-day countdown officially underway, the international community is left watching to see if this is a high-stakes play for regional leverage or a diplomatic bridge burned for a billion dollars and a bride.
