éter Magyar and his Tisza Party have secured a historic victory in Hungary’s 2026 parliamentary elections, effectively ending Viktor Orbán’s sixteen-year tenure as Prime Minister. With over 70 percent of the ballots counted on Sunday night, preliminary results show Tisza commanding a decisive majority that is projected to reach 138 seats in the 199-seat National Assembly. Addressing a jubilant crowd of supporters in Budapest, Magyar declared that the nation had chosen a “Western future over Eastern isolation,” while a somber Viktor Orbán conceded defeat from Fidesz headquarters, describing the democratic verdict as “clear” before extending a congratulatory phone call to his successor.

The transition marks a radical pivot in Hungary’s geopolitical orientation, particularly regarding the European Union and NATO. Magyar, a former Fidesz insider turned reformer, campaigned on a promise to unfreeze nearly €18 billion in withheld EU funds by immediately restoring judicial independence and joining the European Public Prosecutor’s Office. “The era of the ‘black sheep’ is over,” Magyar told reporters during his victory address. “Hungary is coming home to the heart of the European family, not as a subordinate, but as a respected partner who values the rule of law over the rule of one.”

In a rare moment of public vulnerability, outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán took to the stage to address his base, acknowledging that the political landscape of Hungary had been fundamentally reshaped. “The result is painful for us, but it is clear,” Orbán stated, confirming he would transition to the opposition benches.

Magyar’s victory also redraws the map of the conflict in Ukraine. Under the previous administration, Hungary was seen as a primary obstacle to EU and NATO aid; however, the Prime Minister-elect has pledged to end Budapest’s frequent use of the veto. Though Magyar remains firm that Hungary will not send lethal weaponry to the front lines, he has shifted the focus toward aggressive humanitarian support and participation in Ukraine’s reconstruction. This shift is inextricably linked to his new stance on Moscow, vowing to review energy contracts and reduce Hungary’s reliance on Russian technology.

As the final tallies are certified, Magyar concluded with a direct appeal: “Tonight, we prove that the power belongs to the people.
