Coordinated Attacks Across Mali Intensify Fighting in Kidal and Central Regions

oordinated attacks across northern and central Mali over the weekend have escalated fighting in several key locations, including Kidal, Gao, Sevaré, and the capital, Bamako, according to local sources and security analysts. The surge in violence marks one of the most significant challenges in recent months.

Heavy clashes were reported in Kidal, a strategically significant city in the north. Residents described sustained exchanges of gunfire as armed groups launched a multi-front offensive targeting military positions and administrative areas. The scale and coordination of the attacks have raised concerns about the evolving capabilities of insurgent networks operating across the Sahel region.

Security sources attributed the attacks to a coalition of insurgent groups, including fighters linked to Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-affiliated organization, alongside Tuareg separatist factions reportedly associated with the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA). However, independent verification remains limited, and details regarding the operational structure of the alliance are still emerging.

The Malian Armed Forces responded with defensive operations across multiple areas, supported by foreign military personnel. Fighters linked to the Africa Corps, operating under Russia’s Ministry of Defense, were reportedly engaged in securing key installations in Kidal and at the military base in Kati. Authorities have not confirmed whether any territorial changes occurred following the clashes.

Government officials stated that at least 16 individuals were wounded, though independent observers caution that the actual toll may be higher due to the масштаб and intensity of the violence.
