RCCG Convention Nears Record 11 Million at Redemption City

REDEMPTION CITY, Nigeria — Along the sprawling expanse of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, the world’s largest single-venue Christian gathering entered its final stretch today, ahead of Sunday’s closing ordination and thanksgiving service, as millions of worshippers gathered for the 74th Annual Convention of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG). Running from August 3 to August 9 under the official theme “Mountain Movers,” focused on spiritual warfare, faith, breaking generational barriers, and divine intervention over long-standing obstacles, the week-long convocation reaffirmed Nigeria’s standing among sociologists and theologians as the global epicenter of modern Pentecostalism.

RCCG also hosts a monthly Holy Ghost Service on the first Friday of every month, drawing hundreds of thousands of worshippers, and a multi-day Holy Ghost Congress each December at Redemption City.

The scale of this year’s event set unprecedented operational benchmarks. AWB News estimates on-ground physical attendance exceeded 11 million across the convention week — a figure built on the addition of the Arena’s expanded wings since 2017, the doubling of on-site catering capacity, and comparison to the 8 million attendees recorded during the 2017 Holy Ghost Congress, which drew on a single completed auditorium section and included online and viewing-center participation. RCCG has not issued an independently confirmed on-ground figure for 2026. This vast assembly — drawn from members and non-members alike across Nigeria and international delegations — filled both the historic Old Auditorium and the flagship 3-kilometer by 3-kilometer Arena, alongside surrounding overflow zones across the 2,500-hectare Redemption City.

From an operational standpoint, managing a physical gathering larger than the population of many sovereign nations relies on a deeply decentralized ecclesiastical hierarchy. The church divides the massive assembly grounds into designated administrative sectors corresponding strictly to its organizational structure—flowing from regions and provinces down to zonal headquarters, area headquarters, and individual parishes. For instance, a single province inside the auditorium may encompass roughly 30 zonal headquarters, each zone overseeing approximately 15 area headquarters, and each area headquarters covering around 16 parishes — a cascade that turns an impossible headcount into a section-by-section tally. Inside the auditoriums, seating is systematically demarcated by province, allowing ushering teams to conduct real-time counts within assigned grids before executing a nationwide census-style collation. Security personnel, federal traffic control units (FRSC), and thousands of RCCG internal security personnel managed traffic flow along the expressway and across the grounds.

The 74th edition featured intense round-the-clock intercessory sessions, plenary seminars, capacity-building workshops for youth and business leaders, elders, and church ministers, and the administrative presentation of international growth reports from various continents, alongside key structural adjustments ahead of the new RCCG calendar year starting in September. The gathering also witnessed the mass ordination of thousands of newly consecrated Deacons, Deaconesses, Assistant Pastors, and Full Pastors to support the denomination’s rapidly expanding global network.

Voluntary healthcare providers, including RAPAC, established free medical outreach camps, emergency clinics, and blood donation drives across Redemption City to support the influx.

A central emotional anchor of the convention occurred during the flagship Friday night Holy Ghost Service. The night featured special choral ministrations and prophetic declarations led by the General Overseer. During the service, General Overseer Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, alongside Pastor (Mrs.) Folu Adeboye, extended a traditional altar call for mothers who had previously been trusting God for children. Hundreds of thousands of women who received prayers at the 73rd annual convention marched down the aisles carrying infants—including numerous sets of twins and triplets, and quadruplets—to offer prayers of thanksgiving. Simultaneously, the campsite’s medical facilities and maternity centers managed dozens of live births recorded throughout the convention week, with daily birth updates delivered directly to the congregation. Addressing the newborns and the women who bore them, Pastor Adeboye told the gathering:

The sheer physical density of the convention places RCCG in an unprecedented category within global religious history. While historical Christian events—such as Pope Francis’s 2015 Papal Mass in Manila (estimated at 6 to 7 million attendees), World Youth Day 1995 in Manila (4 to 5 million), and Billy Graham’s 1973 Seoul Crusade (1.1 million in a single service) and 3.2 million total over five days—set major global records, a verified on-ground gathering exceeding 11 million physical attendees in a single continuous complex remains singular within global Christianity, drawing structural comparisons only to non-Christian mega-pilgrimages like India’s Hindu Kumbh Mela, whose 2025 edition recorded a single-day peak of roughly 76 million and a 45-day total exceeding 660 million, or Iraq’s Shia Arba’een, which drew 22.1 million pilgrims in 2024.

This administrative capability is anchored in the infrastructure of Redemption City itself. Founded in 1982 as a modest retreat along Kilometer 46 of the expressway, spanning over 2,500 hectares, a landmass significantly larger than Vatican City, the self-sustaining church city now operates much like an autonomous municipality. It houses tens of thousands of permanent residents, swelling to millions during major programs, its own independent gas-turbine power plant, water processing plants, financial institutions, health centers, residential estates, and Redeemer’s University.

The movement’s global trajectory traces back to 1952, when it was founded in Ebute Metta, Lagos, by Pa Josiah Akindayomi. Operating initially as a strict holiness prayer fellowship, Akindayomi, who was illiterate, recorded the church’s name through a spiritual vision. Prior to his passing in 1980, he named Enoch Adejare Adeboye—then a young lecturer in Applied Mathematics at the University of Lagos—as his successor. Taking leadership as General Overseer in 1981, Adeboye launched an aggressive church-planting strategy aimed at establishing a parish within a 5-minute walk in developing countries and a 5-minute drive in developed nations.

Today, RCCG operates tens of thousands of parishes across more than 190 countries, backed by extensive socio-economic networks, primary and secondary educational institutions, Bible colleges, and a global outreach program, HIS Passion Daily, that manages feeding schemes, rehabilitation centers, and international medical outreach.
